Learn About American Lutheran Church

At ALC, we strive to create a welcoming environment that feels not just familiar, but freeing too. For 50 years, we have prioritized the word of God in its rich and relevant variety, multiple music ministries, programs that bring community and church together for fun and fellowship, and care for all the individual people God loves.

We invite you to participate in our faith community as you see fit, and know we will be better for having you.

Senior Pastor

Rev. Scott Klimke

After over twenty years in Pennsylvania, my wife Julia and I were drawn to Arizona as she approached retirement. My ministry focuses on meaningful worship, compassionate care, and strong relationships. With a military and fundraising background, I value teamwork and believe the church thrives as a community. I’m honored to serve at American Lutheran Church alongside a dedicated team and look forward to growing in faith together.

Our Purpose At American Lutheran Church

We start by inviting any into the freeing grace of Christ and his cross and the resurrection hope of Christ’s empty tomb. Vouching for the sincerity of our invitation, we then welcome those who join us in ways that are obviously personal. Trusting that faith is a gift the Holy Spirit most often gives in community, we then turn to God’s word in its rich and relevant variety for spiritual food and energy so that each energized person might be included in the mission of Christ-centered care for the world God loves.

Faith

A Welcoming Community of Faith

First, on an ancient list of Christian virtues, Scripture reveals that faith comes not from within but by hearing. At American Lutheran Church, we sing faith, speak faith, and share faith as it’s long been done throughout the world so that faith might grow and mature in each person’s life. Life changes for the better when we’re led to trust in the surety of God’s grace and love for each of us in all our individual complexity and contradiction. Things get even better when faith helps us find our unique and individual place in God’s mission for the world God loves.

Hope

Worship, Grow, and Serve with Hope

Hope for today and tomorrow is one fruit of faith, and Scripture says it’s meant for sharing. At American Lutheran Church, we offer in-person and online services, Bible study, and ministries of care and compassion so that the hope of Christ’s empty tomb might grow in impact and blessing. Dead ends and detours are just stops along the way for those blessed with faith’s hope that all things shall be possible for God for whom all things work together for good.

Love

Strengthening Faith, Sharing God’s Love

According to Scripture, faith’s most important fruit is love done in imitation of Christ. At American Lutheran Church, each gathering teaches us more about Jesus so that with God’s blessing and direction, we can love more like Jesus. As ALC gathers and communicates, ample opportunity is given to apply what’s learned about Jesus’ love in everyday life. Sometimes it’s making time for the lonely, the confused, and the hurting. Sometimes it’s volunteering to help with an internal or external ministry. Sometimes it’s participating in the collection and distribution of items of need. Sometimes it’s writing a check.

Questions About Worship

Depending on the time of the year, our regular schedule during the months of November – April includes three worship opportunities: Saturday at 4 PM and Sunday at 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM. Because Sun City is made up of many snow-birds, during the months of May – October, we have two worship opportunities: Saturday at 4 PM and Sunday at 9:30 AM. Each worship service normally lasts between an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes.

From anywhere in the parking area, look for the bell tower; the doors to the sanctuary are located directly underneath it. As you enter the narthex, or gathering space, of the sanctuary, we invite you to stop by the “Welcome Center,” where information is available about the church. As a special way to thank you for choosing to worship with us, we would like very much to give you a special gift. If you like, one of our friendly greeters or ushers will help you find a seat.

We follow what is in the Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) book of worship. This type of worship has been passed down through the ages and is similar to many Lutheran, other Protestant churches, and even Catholic worship services.

Absolutely! Regardless of age, everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in worship. If your child becomes restless, there is no need to be embarrassed! We understand it can be difficult for a child to sit for an hour. If this happens, we will do our best to accommodate you and your family. If you would like, we have quiet activities for them to do at their seats. If that’s not enough, you are free to take them into the narthex, outside, or the fellowship hall to calm them down.

Many people aren’t sure what to wear when they visit ALC. We want you to be comfortable when you visit. When you are at one of our services, you’ll see a range of styles from jeans to suits. Feel free to be casual or wear your “Sunday best.”

Holy Communion is a sacrament, or a visible sign of God’s invisible grace. It is not a reward for the perfect; rather food for the hungry. Through Holy Communion we are nourished, empowered, and sent out to share God’s love. We believe the Holy Communion table is not ALC’s table or a Lutheran table. We believe it is Christ’s table, so all are invited.

We love questions. Feel free to ask the pastors before or after the service. The pastors will do their best to direct you through worship so that you don’t feel lost. If you have a question during the service, you are free to ask someone seated around you. If they don’t know, keep asking around until you find someone who does know the answer!
